IT’S OVER!!… or is it?

July 13th, 2010

Who would have thought those 3 years of fashion school would be over this quickly.

Have we not gone through a lot, my co-students? Have we not worked endlessly, night by night, crying?

It has now come to an end! Praise the diploma in our hands, we are educated fashion designers and pattern-makers now!

… but I must say, I’ve come to a point where you don’t know what to do with yourself. It’s the gaping hole inside you after you give birth to a fashion baby, or in our case the diploma. What to do? No work? NOOOOO!

You get the feeling.

Some of my fellow graduates decided to go on vacation, relax and just enjoy life for a tiny moment before we hectically start our search for internships and jobs.

I’ve returned to my parents for a few weeks because I found a job for the time being in a fashion agency. I have to look after two to three collections and sell them to clients in a showroom.

I guess trying out what working in a showroom means is interesting.

Meanwhile I am also preparing applications (and one very favorite one in particular *cough*3.1*cough*) for New York City. It would be ideal to find a place to start at by the end of the year or the beginning of next year.

And I have brought work with me, and starting some little project and also working on the perfect shearling jacket for winter will keep me busy for the moment.

Congratulations to everyone, we’ve made it! Let’s do our best now.

PS: If you are looking for me in this photo, look for the shining face. Literally.

PPS: No words about the show – worst show ever. Models didn’t fit into my clothes (at least 5 of 6), runway to small, etc. … Let’s not talk about it!!!

Quick, quick!

June 30th, 2010

One day before the national jury presentation. Nerves are on edge, calling models.

Model 1 and 2 come in for the fitting, garments fit perfectly, sigh of relief! Adding gloves to the looks, sighing again, taking a picture, please don’t smile.

Rushing to open the door for makeup artist and next model, gulping some water, next next next! Feeling nervous, time is runnig out, in need of 6 models but I only have 5!

Do you know anyone, do you know some other models I can call? Thank god she knows! Calling models, found the 6th model, she will come in for a fitting later. All models fitted, discussed makeup and hair, started folding lookbooks.

Origami style. Getting sleepy, going home to dye socks, taking a 2 hours nap on the bed, then rushing out at 4 AM to the studio to finish shoe straps and iron clothes.

Hectic. Need an energy drink. Hands shaking, getting more excited about the upcoming presentation, maybe lack of food too.

Rushing to dress first models, feed them croissants and sushi, getting them together, makeup artist is a darling.

Running, panting for air. Suddenly 15 minutes left before presentation starts. Trying to memorize the text, breathe breathe!Checking models looks, smiling a little, taking a deep breathe.

Doors is opening, models walking in, I am following.

Let’s go!

Thank you so much my cute models, my make up artist, my friends for helping me out in the last seconds before the presentation.

WE MADE IT!

DEAR DIARY … #4

June 17th, 2010

… will it ever end?

Have been working on my portfolio for the last weeks, simultaneosly to the lookbook shoot and filming the image movie.

And it seems to never end!

I have to redo my accessories… some parts of the bags got dirty during the shoot  and the linings have odd looking spots on them thanks to the fog machine.

Plus dying socks (which dye-savvy people know is hard to do because of the way it’s knitted and the spandex level), plus sewing 3 pairs of gloves, plus buying 6 pairs of shoes for the modesl, plus geeting my lookbook printed and sent to me, plus…

I don’t even want to continue.

However, it is going to be over in just a few weeks. Finally there will be a time of JOY and SLEEP and FOOD again!

(I do love my work though.)

Over and out.

PS: How do you like my  lookbook photo? We got two sets – lookbook and editorial style ones.

SHOOT!

June 5th, 2010

Backstage at my lookbook and editorial shoot.

Model Rosa Claros (izaio), Makeup Ines Schult, Photographer Felix Rachor and my friend Sebastian helping out.

It was AMAZING. What a great experience! The styling was so much fun and seeing my collection at one place, everything together, on a model, was just overwhelming.

Thank you so much. Let’s work together soon again!

DEAR DIARY … #3

May 22nd, 2010

… I can’t believe it!
When I had the idea about this blog it was still a long way until the end. Threehundred something days.
And now, look at my countdown…
I can’t believe it’s going to be over soon.

We got information about the national jury members.
In order to be allowed to present our collection at the show we need to go through this national jury presentation.
The members are German fashion and press people who are going to judge our collection and decide whether we are show-worthy or not. It is schedulded for the end of June.

Rumor has it Marios Schwab it going to be one of the judges. Oooooooh.

But although days seem short, there is still so much to do! The list is steadily growing as photo shoot preparation need to be done (photographer, models, makeup artists, studio, …) and the garmets and accessories have to be ready for the shoot! At the end there are always a million tiny things keeping you away from finishing everything.

Accessories by the end of next week, is what I tell myself.

Let’s not forget the 90 flat drawings which are due by the end of may.

PS: Since my stolen camera has not shown up again and there is a general lack of money, no new photos for now. Stay tuned!

the PRADA-Rule

May 11th, 2010

The term “PRADA-Rule” has first appeared half a year ago when I was talking to my classmates about fabrics and qualities.

At that time someone was having a presentation on Miuccia Prada and there was a very interesting quote. It was something along

“I don’t like ordinary fabrics. I want to use ugly fabrics and turn them into a humourous and new interpretation of fabrics everyone wants to wear. We change the quality and look of a fabric until it’s completely new!”

Since this day we have jokingly used this term for , at first glance , not so pretty fabrics we saw in stores and said we could use them by the PRADA-Rule and turn them into beautifull clothes.

For example! One of my classmates used the cheapest (by price and quality) fabric and made a jacket out of it. I was so surprised about how using a fabric differently makes the garment special. The uglyness of the fabric melted with the design and he created something cool and innovative.

And sometimes using a special looking fabric is the key to an interesting collection. The combination of colors and patterns on the fabric make a collection noticable and interesting.

Look at Prada and Miu Miu, there are plenty of interesting fabric choices, combined with open seams and other curious looking fabric finishings (the worn-out silk from Miu Miu Spring 09! Or the beach print from Prada 2010!)

For my collection I have been sticking to black, taupe and burgundy but I have decided to go by the PRADA-Rule and use a color I have never worked with before. In fact, it is a color I really dislike.

Orange!

I know going by the PRADA-Rule will help me create looks people will be curious about. And even fabric “incidents” like dying in the wrong color or making it accidentally wrinkle will make it interesting.

As my camera with all the studio pictures has been stolen I can’t take new photos of my studio work for now. Working on it! For now, please look at the color scheme for the accessories in the photos above.

Dear diary … #2

May 3rd, 2010

Have been in the studio for 34 hours.

Thirtyfour.

By the end of the day we have the following result:

4 garments stay,

8 new need to be done by… end of may?
No clue.

Plus accessories for shoot,
plus finding photographer and a model and a makeupartist and a studio to shoot in.

A lot to handle.

… off to bed to dream about a 48 hours day and a superhuman body.

PS: My amazing sewing plans never work out. But don’t we love making plans… and to-do-lists!

Dear Diary… #1

April 28th, 2010

… the past weeks have been extremely busy.

All the looks need to be finished by Monday so we have been staying at the studio 24/7. Hello major sleep deprivation.

I usually nap on my desk instead. Unhealthy!

We need to have at least 9 finished garments on monday for a presentation. I would love to show 11 pieces plus 2 lingerie pieces but at this point I can not really tell if I will get the additional pieces done by monday.

100% done = 0/11

Last finishings (embellishments, studs, belts ad belt loops, …) = 7/11

Haven’t even started sewing = 4/11

Time is pressuring and the next days will be extremely busy again. I need an intern… .

My embellishemnts are so much work – everything is hand stitched of course. But it takes a long long time…. have been stitching the jewels and studs onto the first dress for 10-12 hours.

Checklist:

Wednesday: Finish correcting pattern for jumpsuit, sew jumpsuit, sew dress 2, sew bra and panties

Thursday: Make pattern for skirt, sew skirt, make pattern for trenchcoat, correct length of dress 1

Friday: Sew trenchcoat proto and trenchcoat

Saturday: Correct and finish other pieces

Sunday: Finish all the pieces, check embellishments, make illustrations for accessories

The finished 12 pieces collection is was due on May 7th.

Lookbook shoot photos are due by the end of May (in theory) but it is very unlikely to get this done on time as we have to make accessories for the shoot as well. Besides, looking for a photographer / model / make up artist / studio to shoot in is very time consuming and difficult to set up quickly. At least I have found someone who is willing to help me out with my 2 minutes movie. (Wait, what? Movie?… Yes… .)

Keep your fingers crossed. Everything needs to be will be finished by the end of the week.

(Positive energy!)

Introducing: The studio

April 19th, 2010

Where once young boys and girls were having chemistry classes , we had now found a place to work on our collections.

After a 12-16 hours day you just do not want to take work back home. Not to mention all the pins and threads stuck to your clothes. So the 5 of us from school decided to lent this old chemistry room right across the school building. (Our fashion school is located in a 500 years old elemantary school!)

We had come across certain suprises in this old room, such as a locker with left behind toxic chemicals – which we did open just to find a rather dangerous content and to start panicking about how to get rid of the toxins – or a not too well functioning faucet or the left overs of broken glass tubes. The list is endless.

However, we managed to arrange it somewhat nicely to our own needs and we have a really nice working space now.

Everyone has their own part of the room with a desk, a sewing machine, shelves, fabrics and a rail. I bought huge boards to pin fabric samples and mood pictures onto it.

Mine is still a little bit messy. Or maybe this is how I am after all. I am constantly re-arranging things, adding new furnniture pieces or boxes. (Maybe I will add a picture of my desk later. ) Unsettled feelings? Maybe.

I love working with everyone else, especially at night we keep each other awake. Sometimes it gets a little bit noisy and all I can do is turn the volume of my ipod a bit louder and just stop listening to my surroundings… .
